Research for Action is a worker co-operative producing research to further economic, social and environmental justice.
Our focus is on local democracy and accountability. In recent years we have helped successful campaigns against disastrous loan schemes in local government, supported ‘citizen auditors’ to scrutinise local government decision-making, outlined the ‘accountability gap’ in local councils, especially in relation to audit, and organised events and discussions as part of the European Municipalist Network.
Our current research is centred on local authorities experiencing financial crisis, including effective bankruptcies and the Westminster interventions into the running of local authorities in crisis. At a critical time for English local government, we want to know what the democratic effects of those interventions are.
